Description:
In this course we will examine the application of linguistic analysis to
legal issues and practices -- a growing field known as forensic
linguistics. Readings include a selection of cases in which linguists
have served as expert witnesses, supplemented by study of the
theoretical methods employed and the linguistic issues underlying them.
in addition to considering expert testimony, we will also explore more
general application of linguistic analysis to courtroom and
investigative discourse. Emphasis is on understanding and assessing
linguistic argumentation and its relevance in the domain of law.
